Reflection

I’ve been a fan of Marvel ever since the first Iron Man film came out in 2008, from there I discovered other fans via twitter and tumblr, and then discovered my love for comics. One of the first graphic novels I bought was a Guardians of the Galaxy one, from there I discovered a passion for a group of rebellious superheroes. At that time my most anticipated Marvel movie was Guardians of the Galaxy, I wanted to see my favourite characters brought to life in the cinema.
I chose to write about Guardians of the Galaxy because I found it interesting how James Gunn used pop culture references to add more depth to the character, instead of having them there purely for audience pleasure. The soundtrack was also another interesting part, I enjoyed how the soundtrack was used in conjunction with the narrative, instead of having it playing over the top just to make more money from album sales. An example of a recent film of the same genre, that tried to use a soundtrack effectively, but in the end not as successfully as Guardians, was the 2016 DC film Suicide Squad.

On a blog post by Jenkins, he stated “we see different things and say different things if we are writing about a community which we are a member of than when we are dealing with that same community as an outsider” (2008), which is true in the case of my academic blog. Being a fan of Marvel and more specifically Guardians of the Galaxy means I struggled with a critical approach, I attempted to look and analyse the film as an outsider but due to my personal involvement within the fandom, both in and out of social media, however my work was mainly positive towards the subject.
